Steakhouse Dinner at Home

Published: Feb 11, 2026 by Lee Buchin ·

What’s better than a steakhouse dinner? One you don’t have to leave the house for. It’s indulgent but relaxed, familiar but still special. Think shrimp cocktail to start, a baked potato bar, high-quality steaks, Old Fashioneds, and brownies for dessert. Light some candles, throw a white tablecloth on the table, and suddenly your dining room feels like the best seat in the house. Perfect for a low-key date night or a dinner party where everyone’s a little overdressed and very well fed.

The menu

This menu pulls straight from the steakhouse playbook: great cuts of steak, simply cooked, with all the sides you actually want to eat. Nothing fussy, nothing elaborate. Just solid, indulgent food that knows exactly what it’s doing. It’s an ideal setup for a fancy-ish dinner party because the theme does most of the work for you. Add white tablecloths, lots of candles, and suddenly your dining room feels romantic without trying too hard.

If you want to make it a little more communal (and take some pressure off yourself), loop in a few friends with a dish or two. Roasted asparagus, a Caesar salad, or portobello mushroom steaks for the vegetarians are all easy, low-stress asks that still feel on-theme. The result is a dinner that feels generous, collaborative, and very well-fed. Here’s the menu breakdown:

Starters

  • Shrimp cocktail: Serve the shrimp in martini glasses if you want to lean into the steakhouse fantasy. Add a slice of lemon and suddenly they’re the chicest thing on the table. It’s simple, it’s nostalgic, and it always works.
  • Spicy Caesar salad with toasted breadcrumbs: I'm slightly obsessed with this recipe because it's got a little heat and way more texture than the traditional Caesar salad. I use sourdough for the breadcrumbs because that’s usually what’s around, but truly any breadcrumbs will do. It’s a small twist on a classic that makes the whole thing feel just a little more interesting.

Mains

  • Ribeye steaks with herby compound butter: This is where you keep things classic. Ribeye, filet mignon, New York strip (these are the cuts you expect to see at a steakhouse for a reason). For this dinner, we went with a mix of ribeye and filet mignon so everyone could get what they wanted (always a good move). To keep things simple and stress-free, the steaks were sous-vided ahead of time, then finished on the grill right before serving. Pair the steaks with a simple herby compound butter and you're golden.
  • Black pepper balsamic portobello mushroom steaks (vegetarian): If you’ve got vegetarians at the table, portobello steaks are an easy, very on-theme solution. They’re savory, hearty, and hold their own next to the real thing, especially when dressed up with black pepper and balsamic. No sad side dishes here, this feels like a proper main.

Sides

  • Baked potato bar with caviar and white wine fondue: This is where you can really have some fun and be creative with toppings! A baked potato bar already feels generous, but adding caviar and a white wine fondue sauce pushes it firmly into steakhouse territory. We set out butter, herbs, bacon, sour cream, steak sauce, and anything else that felt right, then let everyone build their own. Guests love the choose-your-own element, and presenting everything on a tiered tower makes it easy to pass around while still feeling a little bit fancy.
  • Lemon garlic roasted asparagus: A simple green side to balance everything else. Roasted asparagus is classic for a reason, and the lightly roasted lemon slices make it feel polished without extra effort. It’s fresh, bright, and exactly what you want next to a rich steak dinner.

Drinks and Dessert

  • Classic Old Fashioned: An Old Fashioned is basically non-negotiable with steak. The caramel and oak notes in the bourbon play so well with the savory char, while the bitters and alcohol cut through the richness in a way that feels very intentional and very satisfying. My husband used to bartend back in the day, so he put his own spin on it for our guests, which made the whole thing feel a little more special.
  • Chocolate peanut butter brownies: My recipe for fudgy peanut butter brownies is the ideal way to end an indulgent meal like this. Rich, chocolatey, and exactly what you want after a steakhouse dinner. Serve them warm with your favorite local ice cream and a generous drizzle of hot fudge and call it a night. No notes.

Set the table

Think sleek, clean, and elegant. White tablecloths, napkins, and dishware create a simple base that instantly elevates the table. Layer in brass candlesticks, a few tealights, and subtle flowers for a soft pop of color. Keep everything low and understated so conversation and food stay front and center. When the table is this pared back, the meal naturally becomes the focal point.

The tablescape

These are the exact pieces we used for this dinner party. You can click on any image to shop. The martini glasses are my favorite. They’re sturdy, the perfect size, and ideal for hanging shrimp off the edge, which feels very important for a steakhouse moment at home.

Flowers

I love using bold colors like red and pink because they really pop against a bright white tablecloth. The arrangements stay low and subtle, anchoring the ends of the table without getting in the way. They pair beautifully with the brass elements and play nicely with the greenery already on the table, whether that’s herbs on the food or a San Pellegrino bottle tucked in between place settings.

Party Prep

Staying organized is the difference between actually enjoying your dinner party and silently resenting everyone you invited. Label containers, do as much prep as you can the day before, and don’t overthink every detail. A little planning goes a long way in keeping the night relaxed and fun. And don’t forget to actually enjoy it. We love ending dinner parties with collaborative board games. It keeps things light, fun, and gives everyone a reason to linger at the table a little longer.
